Tony Kearney of Ramsgate has completed the first leg of a journey to lone circumnavigate the north pole in his Deep Seadog the ‘Mohican’.

The 12,000 mile journey will take Tony through waters free of ice for only 2 months each year (Northeast and Northwest Passages) so he’ll be ‘wintering’ in Siberia or Alaska and it’s believed a successful challenge will constitute a significant Yachting record ... all made more incredible because Tony celebrated his 67 birthday in 2006. Regular updates on Tony’s progress can be found on  www.arctictony.com

Boat Scrubber

Recently I got chatting to a chap who has patented an idea that could revolutionise the boating industry. The ' Boat Scrubber' is designed to scrub the hull of any boat whilst it is still in the water. Two computer controlled brushes 'feel' their way around any hull and wipe away weed and slime. He has now set up a website with more information, or you can see it in action in Yarmouth harbour (IOW). The website is www.boat-scrubber.com.

Paper Charts

Ray Claucherty of SeaCanis has recently written to me recommending Marine Chart Services This company offers a wide range of charts and other publications at reduced prices according to age and correction status. If you are planning a long voyage you could save a lot of money without the risk of travelling without local charts.

Electronic Charts

I have discovered an interesting site www.fugawi.com that offers chart plotting software for use on a personal computer. They can also supply some charts but you can also use their software with charts you scan yourself. We have been using the software this year on 'Dougal' and would be happy to discuss with anyone interested.

Books, CDs and DVDs

You can buy these from Amazon through this website, and earn the SeaDog Association a commission of 5-15% of the sale price at no cost to yourself. Click here to browse...
